Introduction to Mallow


Mallow, scientifically known as Malva sylvestris L, is a two-year or perennial herbaceous plant that can grow up to 20-120 centimeters in height with reddish-purple flowers.


Geographical distribution:

Mallow is grown in many provinces of Iran, Europe, the Mediterranean region, and Southwest Asia.

Composition and active ingredients:

Mallow leaves contain about 8% mucilage, which after hydrolysis produces glucose, arabinose, rhamnose, galactose, and galacturonic acid. It also contains tannins and flavonoids.

Therapeutic properties and effects:

Mallow flower tea, due to its mucilage content, is a good cough suppressant. It is also used as an anti-cold and anti-inflammatory agent for mouth and throat swelling. Because it has a weak astringent property, it also acts as an anti-diarrheal agent. Other properties of Panirak include pain relief, anti-inflammatory, anti-infective, astringent, laxative, diuretic, expectorant, and uterine tonic. Mallow has a cool and moist nature.
